Besides being a crazy cat lady, I am an animal lover, and that includes squirrels. It’s fun watching them chasing each other, breaking into bird feeders, and just being themselves.
Some people think they’re dumb animals. However, they are smart enough to store food and remember where they have stored all those nuts!
I recently went to the commissary and picked up a big bag of peanuts for my sister, which reminded me of a couple of our experiences with squirrels. So here are our squirrel communication stories.
My Sister Squirrel Story
My sister enjoys feeding and watching the birds at the bird’s feeder. Of course, it’s going to attract hungry squirrels. She doesn’t mind them eating the seeds and buys them peanuts in the shell, too.
The store ran out of peanuts in the shell, so she had to buy a bag of unshelled peanuts.
A few days later, my sister is having coffee on her patio. A squirrel jumped on the railing.
Then the squirrel went into a spoke representation of squirrels mode by showing her a peanut in a shell. She got the message and replied, “I know you like those better, but the store ran out of it. I’ll get them for you the next time.” The squirrel understood and left.
My Squirrel Story
This happened three decades ago. I was a spiritual advisor for a woman, and we went to have lunch at the Green in Morristown, New Jersey, USA. It’s a historic park in the center of the town square. I’ll call my friend Amy for the sake of the story.
We were eating apples when a squirrel came over. The squirrel looked at me and went on his hind legs as if to say, give me a piece. I threw a piece of apple that he gobbled down.
Amy thought it was adorable and threw a piece of her apple. The squirrel bent down, sniffed at it, and stood back up. I threw another piece of apple, which the squirrel ate.
She was upset that the squirrel didn’t want her apple. I said, “It must be the apple, here try mine.”
Amy threw the piece of apple I just gave her. Again, the squirrel sniffed it and wouldn’t eat it.
The squirrel looked at me again, so I threw him a couple of more pieces.
My friend was obviously upset about the squirrel preferring me over her.
It’s funny now, but I didn’t dare laugh at the time to avoid hurting my friend more. I wonder why the squirrel preferred my energy or scent on the apple over Amy’s. Or perhaps it was something else?
Final Thoughts
I hope our squirrel’s experiences give you food for thought. To me, it’s proof that squirrels are smart, and how we can communicate with them. Wouldn’t it be amazing if they could talk? Do you have any squirrel stories?
FYI, I reduced the prices on all my eBooks at all online bookstores. Since Smashwords has always been good to me and other Indie authors, they are available there at an additional 50% off.
Squirrels are very smart! Before I got my home, I lived in an apartment. Many of the buildings, including mine, had them in the attic. I came home from work one day to find a squirrel had chewed a hole in the wall, right beside the window cat perch! The squirrel was inside the wall looking out at me, and my poor cat looked at me like, "what do you want me to do about it!"
